Rumah Anak Kesayanganku Day 1

"What's done to children, they will do to society."
~ Karl A. Menninger

Kriing kriiing… it’s morning already. Rise and shine, guys! You know the saying: ‘The early bird gets the worm’.

Today is the first day of our social engagement program at Rumah Anak Kesayanganku. We gather at Biomedical Foyer, Faculty of Engineering, University of Malaya at 8 am and depart to Bukit Beruntung, Rawang.  We have our breakfast along the way and an hour later, we arrive at Rumah Anak Kesayanganku.

By the way, have YOU taken your breakfast yet? Remember, breakfast is important to kick-start your day.

After setting up, we move on to our next agenda.
Introduction session.
Every member gets the chance to introduce themselves in front of the students.

 UM Talk by Afif.
The talk is to introduce UM to the students and share the importance of tertiary education early on. Hopefully, this will spark some interests among the students to join the best university in Malaysia.

Enough of that for now. Come on and have some fun. Let the games begin.

Azwan is conducting the games session.

Game 1 - Fasi kata.
The game is similar like 'Simon Says'. The facilitator will issue instruction which should only be followed if prefaced with the phrase 'Fasi kata'. The game is good in developing children's development and listening skills.
Resolution: To learn the importance of obeying leaders' commands

Game 2 - Engaged, Married and Divorced (Tunang, Kahwin, Cerai)

Divorced mode

Yeah, that's what an 'angry' face should look like.

Engaged mode

 When Fasi said 'tunang'

When 'Kahwin' is shouted out
Resolution: To appreciate our friends and cherish our beautiful memory together.

After the second game, the students are divided into 5 groups for the next LDK session.

The students are asked to write their names, dreams and ambitions on a piece of paper. The papers are then hanged as decorations on the notice board in their class.

Facilitators offer help and advice when asked.

Zalikha is helping a girl to make a butterfly-shaped paper.

The girls are doing their best to create a beautiful artwork.

The boys are proud of their work.

They are so ambitious! We wish them luck and hopefully, all of them will become a successful person in the future :)

Creative, isn't it?

A sweet example of brotherly love.

Game 3 - Nails trick (Main Paku)

Hmm, how do we balance all 14 nails on a single standing nailhead?

Tadaa

The trick is to layout the nails as follows:

Then, lift them up to balance on top of the center nailhead.

This little brain game is all about lowering Centre of Gravity to make a very stable structure.
You can do it fairly easy and impress your friends as well.
Resolution: To learn problem solving skills in an interesting manner. Even if you don't find the
solution  on your first try, never give up. Try and try again. Some of the greatest discoveries have been made by mistake!

Aizuddin and Alif are sharing about the pro's and con's of technology with the kids.

"Men exist for the sake of one another. Teach them then or bear with them."

-Marcus Aurelius Antoninus

After lunch hour, we conduct tutorial sessions to help the kids in their studies.

Mandarin class.

Sue Lyn and Jessie are teaching the students on how to write their names in Mandarin.

The students are so keen to learn Mandarin.

English class.

The 'teachers' are in full gear.

Break clap.

Game 4: The Climb.
It is a truth or fallacy game where the students are divided into 5 groups, then each group will be asked in turn a set of question and they have to answer either 'True' or 'False'.
If the group answered correctly, they can jump one step forward, however, if they give the wrong answer, they have to jump one step backward. The first group to reach the finish line wins.

Azwan is reading out the first question.

Everyone is listening intently. They are so eager to play the game.

Even the facilitators are enjoying themselves.

“The soul is healed by being with children.”
